The Emily Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital presents "Our Path and Autism," an initiative designed to equip families with children on the autism spectrum with essential knowledge. Certain features of this application may also be beneficial during clinical consultations and emergency room visits.

When a child is newly diagnosed with autism, parents often encounter confusion due to the medical jargon used by healthcare professionals. There is a tendency for medical staff to assume clarity in their communication without ensuring that families fully understand the provided instructions and available resources. If parents can articulate the information they received in their own words, it indicates a solid understanding of the matter.

The "Our Path and Autism" application is crafted to:

• Support families from the point of diagnosis throughout their child's development, fostering meaningful dialogue between families and healthcare teams.
• Assist parents in identifying vital information they need to know following their child's diagnosis.
• Provide a platform for parents to express uncertainties regarding information received and to ask pertinent questions.
• Guide families on what specific information they should communicate with healthcare professionals, ensuring that the medical team can confirm understanding and address any miscommunication.
• Empower families to feel confident in caring for their child at home, recognize potential issues, and know how to respond and whom to contact if problems arise.

About The Emily Center, Phoenix Children’s Hospital: Founded in 1990 and named in honor of Emily Anderson, who valiantly battled a rare form of leukemia for four years before passing away just days before her 17th birthday, The Emily Center was established by parents frustrated by the lack of accessible health information. It aims to ensure that families with sick children receive accurate, clear, and free health information in Arizona.
